One-Year Immersion Program
Spend a gap year at the Académie Charpentier, one of the most prestigious French art schools in Paris, fully immersing yourself in French culture while studying graphic arts, interior design, and design.
The Académie Charpentier is located in the heart of the Montparnasse district.
The area became the most important artistic hub for 20th-century artists from all over the world: from Pablo Picasso, Chaïm Soutine, and Marc Chagall to Ernest Hemingway, and so many more.
The Académie Charpentier is located just a stone's throw from all the famous cafés and bars of Montparnasse (Le Dôme, La Closerie des Lilas, La Rotonde, Le Select, and La Coupole), where figures such as Tsuguharu Foujita and Marcel Duchamp, as well as American socialites Peggy Guggenheim and Edith Wharton, would gather.
The Académie Charpentier, one of the leading art schools in Paris since 1945, welcomes you to its legendary premises (where world-renowned artists such as Giacometti, Modigliani, and Balthus—among others—once studied) and offers you a unique opportunity to learn about French art and culture.
The program consists of a ten-month course, preceded by a two-month orientation period to help you adjust to your new environment in France.
Classes begin on Monday, September 2, 2019, and end on Friday, June 26, 2020.
The curriculum covers 12 major areas of graphic design, interior design, and design:
30 hours per week over 43 weeks (including 4 weeks of vacation)
- Observational and Outdoor Drawing: painting; drawing (studies, composition, shape, contrasts, color, framing, proportions), perspective, architecture, space (positioning the subject in space, building a picture, creating an atmosphere)
2 hours per week - Life Drawing: morphology, representation of movement
3 hours per week - Painting: developing one’s own pictorial identity through various techniques. References to renowned French artists and experimentation.
3 hours / week - Color: Theory and Practical Implementation
2 hours / week - History of Art: the major artistic movements in applied arts, decorative arts, and architecture
2 hours per week - Computer Graphics: Computer-Aided Design (CAD: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator…)
3 hours per week - Graphic Design: marketing materials, branding, editorial
2 hours per week - Marketing / Business Acumen: market research, positioning, business strategy, and presentation (both written and oral)
3 hours per week - Illustration: Create briefs using all the techniques studied, from initial research to the finished work. The narrative aspect of the image, the layout, and consideration of format and presentation quality are integral parts of the projects.
2 hours / week - Interior Design / Fashion Design / Textiles: Pattern, Color, and Material Design for the Fashion and Home Furnishings Industries
3 hours per week - Design: use of materials, function of the object, its impact on everyday life, and how it meets the needs of its time. Introduction to sustainable development and eco-friendly requirements
3 hours per week - French for Foreigners: From basic conversation to perfecting your skills, this course will give you the tools you need to enjoy speaking and writing in French during your stay in Paris.

ALL-YEAR ASSESSMENT:
- Methodology: Develop one or more projects to be presented to peers and teachers, followed by an end-of-year assessment before a jury
- Practice in oral and written presentation in preparation for future competitive exams
Conducted during free time (after school and on weekends); can be done individually, in pairs, or in larger groups.
